Check your intonation.

Compare one open string with the same string pressed at fret 12. Remove your capo and mute the other strings.

Press just behind fret 12 with normal pressure. Do not play a harmonic. Repeat the comparison to confirm the result.

Check your six strings.

A BETTER GUITAR SETUP

Start with the open strings

Choose your tuning and leave “Check with capo on” switched off. Remove the capo, tune each open string, then make a second pass. The capo fret selection does not change these open-string targets.

Fit the capo and check again

Select the fret where your capo sits, then turn on “Check with capo on”. Each target rises by one semitone per fret. Pluck without fretting another note. These are the sounding pitches with the capo fitted, not new open-string targets.

If the capo makes a string sharp

Check that the capo sits neatly behind the fret and applies only the pressure needed for a clean note. Refit it before making small tuning adjustments. Recheck the open strings when you remove it.

Check the open guitar and the fitted capo separately

Selecting fret 2 is not an instruction to raise the open strings two semitones. First tune without the capo, then fit it and enable Check with capo on. If you remove it but leave that check enabled, the open notes will correctly appear too low for the raised targets. Keep those two states separate when saving a setup.

Reseat before retuning

If several notes become sharp together, refit the capo just behind the fret with only the pressure required for a clear note. A sideways displacement can affect strings differently. If one remains sharp, repeat the placement before changing its peg. A correction made with the capo on can make the open guitar wrong after removal.

Does setting a capo fret change my open-string tuning?

It changes the comparison targets when Check with capo on is enabled. It does not mean you should tighten the uncapped strings to those raised notes. Tune without the capo first, then fit it and compare the sounding pitches.

Why does one string become sharp after I fit the capo?

Check whether the capo pulls that string sideways or presses harder than needed. Reposition it close behind the fret and use only enough pressure for a clean note if its tension is adjustable. Compare the same string before and after fitting it.

Will the capo tool work with an alternate tuning?

Select the actual open-string preset first. TuneGuitar adds the selected fret’s semitones to each of those targets. A capo on DADGAD therefore follows DADGAD’s intervals; it does not convert the strings to standard tuning.

Your guitar audio is processed entirely on your device. We do not record it, store it or upload it.

Saved guitars, setlists and your ping preference are stored in this browser on this device. You can delete each guitar in “My guitars”. Clearing site data removes these settings and the offline cache. The offline cache contains the tuner’s pages and the code that generates reference tones, never microphone recordings.

Google Analytics (G-G2RC12Y00X) loads only after you accept analytics cookies. It measures visits and usage; microphone audio is never sent to Google. Use Cookie settings in the footer to accept or withdraw consent. Analytics cookies and your choice last up to six months. Advertising uses separate consent settings. The hosting service may process routine connection data to deliver and secure the site.

This site includes the Google AdSense publisher tag. It contacts Google to connect this site to AdSense and load any consent messages published for the site. Advertising is subject to Google’s review and the publisher’s ad and consent settings. Analytics consent does not grant advertising consent.
