Check your intonation.

Compare one open string with the same string pressed at fret 12. Remove your capo and mute the other strings.

Press just behind fret 12 with normal pressure. Do not play a harmonic. Repeat the comparison to confirm the result.

Check your six strings.

Press start, then sweep gently across all six open strings, from thickest to thinnest. Let them ring together.

Check a known reference.

Set the notes you actually need

Open Custom strings and enter each target in physical string order, starting at the thickest side of your guitar. Include the octave: E2 is the low E of a standard six-string guitar; E4 is its high E. Sharps and flats are accepted.

Use a setup that suits your guitar

Custom targets can span E1 to E6, with 4 to 12 individual strings. This range describes what the tool accepts, not what every instrument can safely reach. Choose notes, string gauges and tension appropriate to your guitar.

Save or share your strings

My guitars saves the custom notes, concert pitch, reference sound and capo setup in this browser. Share tuning creates a link containing those settings. Anyone with that link can open the setup without granting microphone permission.

Physical order is not always pitch order

For a re-entrant or paired-string layout, enter the targets in physical selection order rather than sorting frequencies from low to high. Include every octave number: E2 and E4 are different targets. The reference sequence follows your entered order, so review each button before moving a peg.

Make the experiment recoverable

Save the starting setup before creating another one. Name the custom profile with the instrument and full note sequence, then copy its share link if you want a backup outside this browser. The accepted E1–E6 range describes software input, not a tension recommendation for every instrument. A saved profile retains targets, not the physical state of your guitar.

Using this tuning tool

Why must each custom note include an octave?

A letter such as E could mean several very different targets. E2 and E4 are two octaves apart. Enter each complete note in physical string order, from the thickest side, then inspect the reference frequencies before tuning.

Does accepting a custom target mean my guitar can reach it?

No. The input range describes the tool, not a safe tension range for your strings or instrument. Check the instrument and string specifications before a large retune. Reference playback can preview a target without changing your guitar.

Will my saved custom tuning appear on another device?

My guitars stores profiles in the current browser. Use Share tuning to transfer a setup, then save it separately on the other device. Subsequent edits do not automatically synchronise the two copies.

Privacy & cookies

Your guitar audio is processed entirely on your device. We do not record it, store it or upload it.

Saved guitars, setlists and your ping preference are stored in this browser on this device. You can delete each guitar in “My guitars”. Clearing site data removes these settings and the offline cache. The offline cache contains the tuner’s pages and the code that generates reference tones, never microphone recordings.

Google Analytics (G-G2RC12Y00X) loads only after you accept analytics cookies. It measures visits and usage; microphone audio is never sent to Google. Use Cookie settings in the footer to accept or withdraw consent. Analytics cookies and your choice last up to six months. Advertising uses separate consent settings. The hosting service may process routine connection data to deliver and secure the site.

This site includes the Google AdSense publisher tag. It contacts Google to connect this site to AdSense and load any consent messages published for the site. Advertising is subject to Google’s review and the publisher’s ad and consent settings. Analytics consent does not grant advertising consent. When Google’s advertising consent message is available, use Ad privacy settings in the footer to revisit it. No microphone audio is shared with AdSense.
