Check your intonation.

Compare one open string with the same string pressed at fret 12. Remove your capo and mute the other strings.

Press just behind fret 12 with normal pressure. Do not play a harmonic. Repeat the comparison to confirm the result.

Check your six strings.

A BETTER GUITAR SETUP

Set the notes you actually need

Open Custom strings and enter each target in physical string order, starting at the thickest side of your guitar. Include the octave: E2 is the low E of a standard six-string guitar; E4 is its high E. Sharps and flats are accepted.

Use a setup that suits your guitar

Custom targets can span E1 to E6, with 4 to 12 individual strings. This range describes what the tool accepts, not what every instrument can safely reach. Choose notes, string gauges and tension appropriate to your guitar.

Save or share your strings

My guitars saves the custom notes, concert pitch, reference sound and capo setup in this browser. Share tuning creates a link containing those settings. Anyone with that link can open the setup without granting microphone permission.

Play the reference tone for your thickest string. Pluck the open string on your guitar, without pressing a fret.

Listen. Adjust. Repeat.

Turn the tuning peg slowly until the pitches match. Or use your microphone and follow the meter to the centre.

Work your way across.

Follow the notes in your chosen tuning, from thickest to thinnest. Check every string again when you finish, then you’re ready to play.

Why check the strings twice?

Changing string tension can slightly shift the other strings. A second pass catches the small changes and gives you a more settled guitar.

What are the notes in standard guitar tuning?

From the thickest string to the thinnest, standard tuning is E2, A2, D3, G3, B3 and E4. Their frequencies are approximately 82.41, 110, 146.83, 196, 246.94 and 329.63 Hz, using A4 = 440 Hz.

Can I tune without a microphone?

Yes. Choose “Tune by ear”, play a string tone and match the sound with your guitar. Each tone repeats until you stop it. Turn off Repeat to hear a single pluck.

Does this work with an electric guitar?

Yes. The reference notes are the same for a six-string electric, acoustic or classical guitar in standard tuning. For microphone mode, use a clean amp sound at a comfortable volume, or place your device close enough to hear the unplugged string.

Why isn’t the microphone picking up my guitar?

Allow microphone access in your browser, move closer and reduce background noise. Pluck one open string at a time and let it ring. If access is blocked, check your browser’s site settings or use the reference tones instead. Microphone tuning requires a secure HTTPS connection.

Is my audio recorded or sent anywhere?

No. The tuner analyses microphone audio locally in your browser. It does not record, save or upload your playing. Press “Stop listening” to release the microphone.

Privacy & cookies

Your guitar audio is processed entirely on your device. We do not record it, store it or upload it.

Saved guitars, setlists and your ping preference are stored in this browser on this device. You can delete each guitar in “My guitars”. Clearing site data removes these settings and the offline cache. The offline cache contains the tuner’s pages and the code that generates reference tones, never microphone recordings.

Google Analytics (G-G2RC12Y00X) loads only after you accept analytics cookies. It measures visits and usage; microphone audio is never sent to Google. Use Cookie settings in the footer to accept or withdraw consent. Analytics cookies and your choice last up to six months. Advertising uses separate consent settings. The hosting service may process routine connection data to deliver and secure the site.

This site includes the Google AdSense publisher tag. It contacts Google to connect this site to AdSense and load any consent messages published for the site. Advertising is subject to Google’s review and the publisher’s ad and consent settings. Analytics consent does not grant advertising consent.
